Long-Term Owner Reviews

If you've owned your family car for over a year, would you buy it again today?

If you've owned your family car for over a year, would you buy it again today?

No specs. No 0–60 time. No cargo volume in cubic feet.

Just one question:

After a year (or more) of real life – school runs, grocery trips, road trips, broken toys in the back seat – would you buy the same car again?

Not "is it perfect."

Just: knowing what you know now, same budget, same options – yes or no?

I'll go first.

Car: 2021 Honda CR‑V EX‑L

Owned: 14 months

Would I buy it again? Yes. But with one small regret.

The yes part:

The space is perfectly sized for one toddler and a 50‑mile commute. Rear doors open wide. Trunk floor is low. I never fight the car.

The regret:

I wish I'd spent a little more for the hybrid version. The regular 1.5L turbo is fine, but the gas savings and smoother stop‑start of the hybrid would've paid off over time.

So my answer: Yes, but CR‑V Hybrid instead of regular.

Now here's what other parents told me when I asked this question

RAV4 owner (2020, owned 2 years):

"Yes, but only the hybrid. The regular one is loud and cheap inside. The hybrid feels like a different car. Would not buy the gas version again."

CX‑5 owner (2022, owned 18 months, one kid):

"No. And I feel bad saying it. I love driving it. But the back seat is too tight now that my kid is forward‑facing and kicking. If I only had one kid and no plans for another, yes. But we're trying for #2, so no."

Sienna owner (2021, owned 3 years, three kids):

"100% yes. I used to make fun of minivans. Now I tell everyone: just skip the SUV phase and get the van. Sliding doors alone are worth it."

Model Y owner (2023, owned 13 months, two kids):

"No. I wanted to love it. The frunk is fun. But road trips are stressful with charging, and my wife hates the screen for everything. Going back to a CR‑V or RAV4 hybrid."

Outback owner (2019, owned 4 years, two kids + dog):

"Yes, but only the 3.6R (older one). The new turbos are fine but the naturally aspirated 6‑cylinder was bulletproof. I'd buy the exact same car again if I could find low miles."

Sorento PHEV owner (2022, owned 20 months):

"No. Too many little electrical glitches. The concept is great. The execution is frustrating. Trading it in next month for a Highlander Hybrid."

The pattern I'm seeing

Type of owner

Would buy again?

CR‑V / RAV4 Hybrid owners

Mostly yes

CR‑V / RAV4 non‑hybrid owners

Mixed (many wish they'd upgraded)

CX‑5 owners with 1 kid

Yes

CX‑5 owners with 2+ kids

Mostly no

Minivan owners (any brand)

Overwhelmingly yes

EV owners with home charging + 2 cars

Yes

EV owners as only family car

Mixed to no

Kia/Hyundai PHEV owners

Surprisingly low (glitches)

Now your turn

Post your answer in this format:

Car: [year, make, model, trim]

Owned: [months or years]

Kids/ages: [optional but helpful]

Would you buy it again? Yes / No / Yes but different trim

One sentence why:

The point isn't to find the "best" car.

The point is to help the next parent avoid your mistake – or repeat your smart move.

So: knowing what you know now… would you?
